Any excuse to make sugar cookies is a good one to me!

I love most cookies, but sugar cookie always seem special because we typically only have them at Christmas time. Well, that was until I started making up reasons to bake them a few years ago…they ended up being some of my first ever Instagram posts, but have been made timeless amounts since.

What I quickly discovered is that the recipe is a very good one for decorating cookies! The trick is to cook them about a minute longer than if you were planning to eat them without icing. As soon as the bottom starts to turn golden (even the slightest bit) is when I would normally take them out of the oven – that way they are light and fluffy sugar cookies. To decorate them with icing they are a little easier to work with is they are a bit “flatter”, like I mentioned, leave them in the oven only slightly longer to get a “flatter” cookie.
This recipe is from my Mom which is only o say that it has been tried, tested and true… I am might be biased, but this is the best Sugar Cookie Recipe I have ever tried!

Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 4 tsp baking powder
  • 4 cups flour

Instructions

Cream together wet ingredients, stir in dry ingredients (I let the dough sit in the refrigerator for about 1 hour before the next step).

Roll out dough and cut into desired shapes using cookie cutters.

Bake at 350F for 10 minutes (if using a convection oven check after 6 minutes)

What are those icing tubes and where did you get them? They look WAY less messy than the regular piping tubes I have for icing!
