The Best Burger in Bathurst, NB

The mission – find the best burger in Bathurst, New Brunswick!

The Best Burger in Bathurst New Brunswick Canada #burger #travel

Many cities and regions celebrate burger week or even burger month. The idea is typically to help promote local restaurants, support a culinary competition and possibly to support beef farmers. I was supposed to go to PEI this month when sadly the trip got cancelled at the last minute. I was really disappointed not to see my friends and spend time on the island, but even more disappointed to miss out on the PEI Burger Love night we had planned.

The idea was to research a selection of special edition burgers being made during PEI Burger Love month to order. Once ordered rather than eating at each place (we only had one night after-all!) our plan was to bring them home, split them four ways and each of us have the opportunity to try out four burgers in one night. Brilliant, right?!

Since I didn’t get a chance to do this on PEI I thought “why let a good idea go to waste?”. And the mission to find the best burger in Bathurst began!

Best Burger in Bathurst Taste testing - New Brunswick Burger

I started the search in the most logical place, Facebook. The famous “Danny Burger” was recommended several times as a local favourite. It is worth mentioning the “Banquet Burger” from Gowan Brae Golf Course was recommended quite a few times as well. The golf course is not open yet so we were unable to add it to our taste testing menu… it will be included in round two!

We chose 4 burgers from 4 different restaurants in search of the best burger in Bathurst:

  • The Danny Burger – Big D Drive-in
  • The New Brunswick Burger – Joey’s Pub & Eatery
  • Bacon Cheeseburger – Atlantic Host
  • Mushroom & Jack Burger – Cast & Crew Gastropub

We knew that testing burgers this way wouldn’t give us the “full” experience since burgers, especially from a restaurant, are best eaten as soon as they are served. But since we ordered them all for pick-up we levelled the playing field to find the best burger in Bathurst and set the plan in motion.

At the last minute we added Bathurst beer to pair with the burgers. Beer seemed like a natural fit and it ended up being an excellent pairing choice. There are two microbreweries in Bathurst, so we chose 2 beer from each brewery to sample:

Four Rivers Brewery

  • Nor ‘Easter American Pale Ale
  • Havre St-Pierre American Amber Ale

13 Barrels Brewing

  • Pabineau Pale Ale
  • Tall Tales IPA

We quartered the burgers as well as each beer for a delightful Bathurst Burger & Beer feast. One of the best things about this taste test was that it was just a fun evening at home hanging out eating good food and drinking good beer. The restaurants or breweries did not know we were doing this and it is something that anyone could copy in just about any town. We chatted about trying veggie burgers sometime, perhaps chicken burgers, etc. You can make this into a date night quite easily and taste test whatever you choose.

You must be wondering by now which burger won the taste test to become the BEST BURGER IN BATHURST! The vote was unanimous – the Mushroom & Jack Burger from Cast & Crew Gastropub was our winner!

Honourable mention went to the New Brunswick Burger from Joey’s Pub & Eatery. It was a very close second and we all loved the smoked meat that we chose to add to the burger.

And for the beer… our taste buds differed quite a bit here. One person loved the Tall Tales IPA and another person couldn’t stop talking about the Pabineau Pale Ale both from 13 Barrels Brewing. In the end, the Havre St-Pierre American Amber Ale from Four Rivers Brewery won the vote. The votes were honestly so tight it’s safe to say you can’t make a wrong choice when it comes to the Bathurst beer selection.

We will add the “Banquet Burger” from Gowan Brae into the competition soon, until then, enjoy all the Bathurst burgers & beer folks. If you try any of these let me know what you think!
