Have you ever gone to a restaurant and thought “Oh my goodness, this is sooo good! Why didn’t I think of this?” I think we have all been there from time to time and that is exactly how our take on Breakfast Pizza began.
We went to Cape May Cafe at Disney’s Beach Club Resort for Minnie’s Beach Bash Breakfast and had the most delicious Breakfast Pizza at the buffet. The concept seemed so simple we were all amazed we hadn’t ever thought of putting traditional breakfast foods on a pizza.
I have never made homemade pizza dough before so I sought out a trusted source in my friend Suzi. She makes homemade pizza weekly and even did a Facebook Live tutorial on it, so I knew her recipe had to be fool proof. Thank goodness, I was right. I made the dough following her instructions with the help of a few of my Pampered Chef tools and it came out perfectly.
While the dough was rising I put bacon in the oven using my large bar pan (a stone pan). I did this for two reasons 1) to only use one pan and 2) to add a little bacon goodness to the bottom of my pizza. I used the same large bar pan to cook the pizza later on.
The most complicated part of our breakfast pizza creation was the sauce. We couldn’t quite remember what the sauce was that we had at Cape May Cafe other than remembering it to be delicious. In true “home cooked meal” fashion we decided we couldn’t go wrong with butter, milk and cheese.
I used Ann’s Cheese Sauce recipe from her Macaroni and Cheese Bake only I made less of the original recipe. These are the quantities we used and still had more than enough.
CHEESE SAUCE
1 tbsp butter
1 tbsp flour
pinch salt
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup shredded cheese (we used marble)
- Melt butter in saucepan over low heat. Blend in flour and salt, cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
- Gradually whisk in milk, cook stirring frequently, until thickened.
- Remove from heat and add Cheese. Stir until melted.
Once the dough was ready, I spread it out on the cooled large bar pan that still had a touch of bacon grease remaining. I then spread the cheese sauce on the dough and began adding toppings. You could add any kind of toppings to Breakfast Pizza – be creative and have fun with this part!
TOPPINGS
6 scrambled eggs (cooked with garlic powder, salt and pepper)
Approximately 8 pieces of bacon cut up in small pieces
1/2 Red Bell Pepper, chopped
1/2 Yellow Bell Pepper, chopped
1/2 Orange Bell Pepper, chopped
small onion, finely chopped
sprinkled additional cheese sauce over the toppings
marble cheese
I baked the pizza in the oven at 425F for about 18 minutes. I checked it every two minutes after baking for 12 minutes and recommend you do the same. Depending on the size of your pizza and the pan you use the dough may cook a bit quicker than mine did.
The recipe did not disappoint; we will certainly be making Breakfast Pizza again!
