Outdoor skating is somewhat new to me other than the ice rinks in our backyard that my dad poured is heart and soul into throughout my childhood. The backyard rink was a practice rink; where we learned new skills, perfected new hockey moves and gained much agility moving around tight corners. Living in Northern New Brunswick for the majority of my life has always lent itself to amazing indoor ice surfaces being available whether it be for public skating, ice rental, organized learn to skate programs, ringuette, hockey, and the list goes on.
There is something a little extra special to an outdoor skating surface.
There are several outdoor skating rinks scattered through Northern New Brunswick. They offer different experiences from an “oval feel” in Neguac to a “hockey rink” feel in Parkwood Heights subdivision in Bathurst.
Neguac Municipal Park Ice Loop is new in 2022 and is a really fun way to spend an afternoon.
The ice loop has Christmas decorations spread throughout the park, lights on trees, benches along the way in case you need a break and parking adjacent making it easy to get to/from your vehicle with skates on. Neguac is about 55 minutes from Bathurst and about 30 minutes from Miramichi.
Neguac is a quaint coastal village between Tracadie and Miramichi. The Richelieu Municipal Park is located across the street from the church. You’ll see what I mean when you’re driving… look for the big church and you’ll find it.
